Pre-requisite qualifications

2:i or above in BSc, BEng/MEng or MSc in an engineering or physical sciences discipline and/or admission to the Ctr of Excellence in Medical & Biological Engineering or DTC: Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine PhDs.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

The objective of this module is to aid the student in developing and enhancing their research performance, employability, professionalism and engagement with society.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate the following generic skills appropriate for PhD level and deemed relevant for the research project and development of the academic career of the student.

- information management skills communication skills (oral, visual and written);
- understanding of relevant ethical and legal issues connected with research;
- application of effective project management and enterprise through setting goals; milestones; prioritisation; responsible working practice);
- understanding of relevant health and safety issues and demonstrate responsible working practices;
- knowledge transfer, commercial and public awareness including interaction with networks, research groups and wider communities;
- understanding of ethical and legal issues connected to their research;
- ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, understanding how your behaviour impacts on others when working in teams.

The student should have reflected on the acquired skills and their relevance for the student's own research and academic career. These reflections should take the form of a written report as part of the student’s Professional Development Portfolio.

Skills outcomes

- enterprise, knowledge transfer and commercial awareness

Syllabus

The module will develop a range of generic skills that underpin successful achievement in a wide range of future careers. It covers four core areas: communication skills (written, oral, visual), enterprise, knowledge transfer and commercial awareness, working in multidisciplinary teams and public engagement.

The options on this module consists of participation in generic skills courses provided by the central training providers (SDDU, ISS, Library, Institute meetings and seminars, the Faculty of Engineering or outside bodies). The courses chosen must be at an appropriate level and be agreed between the student and his/her supervisor(s). The aim of the courses must be to strengthen or develop generic skills.

The module will be delivered by interactive seminars and independent online learning.

Students will engage in critical self-reflection through personal development planning (PDP).

Private study

- Students will be required to organise their reflective log to demonstrate their learning after seminars, meetings, training sessions, workshops etc.

- Each student will follow their own Training and Professional development Plan (TPDP) which will be developed in conjunction with their supervisor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Progress will be monitored on a continuing basis by students research supervisor and/or programme director who will discuss with the student about selecting optional courses for the module.
- The Professional Development Portfolio will be reviewed at formal tutor/supervisory meetings and a 1,000 word report by the student reflecting at the end of year 2 will be assessed.
