Pre-requisite qualifications

Students must have obtained an average mark of at least 60% at the end of their second year and be in one of the MEng or Mdes programmes of study when they enter their third year of study.

Students going to non-English countries must be competent with the language of that country. A level of B1 (Threshold Level) would be the minimum acceptable together with further study by the student before going abroad.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to provide students with the experience of studying, living and working in a foreign country. Students will have to learn in a new environment, adapt to a new culture, bureaucracy and either a new language or a variance of English.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the year abroad, students should have demonstrated the ability of being able to:
- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the discipline;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project;
- conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable;
- apply a range of industrially relevant methods for analysis and evaluation of designs;
- appreciate the various design methods.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will have acquired the following skills:
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature;
- an awareness of the variety of design methods available, their relative strengths and weaknesses and provide an ability to select appropriate methods for a particular task;
- team working skills.

All modules taken by the student in the abroad University should have the equivalent syllabi of the modules taken in their programme of study in Leeds.

Private study

- Students are to spend on average 1 hour preparation/revision for each lecture, tutorial and practical.
- They should also spend an appropriate numbers of hours (say 5 or 10 hours) for each piece of coursework given by the abroad university.
- Students should also study an average of 50 hours for each exam which they need to take.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

This will be done by the regular procedures in the hosting University as well as by regular communication with the home Study Abroad Tutor.
