Module summary
The music business today means innovation, creativity, opportunities and connectivity. It is a global business that facilitates interpersonal, intercultural, and international interaction at an unprecedented level in the history of human kind. This module acquaints students with the music business environment, exploring at a basic level a range of key concepts used in categorising and analysing various music business organisations, from new enterprises to medium and large international corporations. In the seminars, students will analyse and discuss a selection of relevant case studies and have the opportunity to explore real-life business scenarios through participation in role plays and other practical exercises. Topics outline:• Music business enterprises and organisations• The role of record labels• Streaming platforms• Live music industry• The music publishing businessObjectives
Upon a successful completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the core specific concepts in the music business and understand various contemporary challenges that the music business is facing.This course aims to give students a foundation in music business and help develop understanding of how business concepts might be applied in the context of the music industry.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of basic business terminology, concepts and theories;
2. review current developments and trends in the music business;
3. provide solutions to basic problems and justify decisions drawing on relevant theories;
4. reflect analytically on the case studies and examples discussed in the sessions.
Syllabus
The following outline syllabus is indicative:
The students will be introduced to basic business terminology and concepts in relation to music, as well as basic business models in the music industry. The module look in detail at various organisations such as record labels, music publishers and live music.
Students will have a chance to participate in real-life scenarios to familiarise themselves with practicalities of the music business working environment.

Private study
It is advised that students spend 3 hours of preparation class = 30 hours. This time should be spent preparing for forthcoming seminars, revising material presented in lectures and consolidating work done in seminars.The remaining 60 independent learning hours will be spent on the preparation for the assessment.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be monitored continuously through:- Regular attendance at lectures and seminar sessions
- During the seminars students will receive feedback and their progress will be monitored by themselves and tutor on an ongoing basis, e.g. class discussion during seminars focused on case studies.
