Module summary

The module exposes students to quality improvement theory and practice. Students may also apply some of the methods and tools taught in previous modules. The learning blog aims to achieve a maximum information exchange and learning among the students.

Objectives

The module aims to enable students to understand the principles and apply the techniques and processes of quality improvement in a health care system of a low or middle income country.

Learning objectives: On completion of this module students should be able to:
- explain the importance of principles and trust in quality improvement;
- distinguish between complicated and complex quality issues;
- describe and critique current concepts, models and theories of quality improvement;
- compare different approaches such as accreditation, licensing, certification and audit;
- analyse the role of the patient, the citizen and the health professional in quality improvement;
- review relevant literature and other material on quality improvement;
- construct a quality improvement policy and framework including the principal functions in a health care system context;
- develop their own plan for quality improvement.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student should know:
- the principles of quality improvement in health care
- how to implement a quality improvement programme in a specific context and organization;
- how to analyse a quality problem in a health care organization;
- how to plan and manage a quality improvement project;
- how to critically assess the appropriate use of quality improvement tools and methods;
- how to use presentation software and other tools to summarize and present a quality issue to a peer audience;
- keep an online reflective learning blog.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module will be able to:
- Analyse and solve problems related to quality improvement
- Utilize quality improvement tools and methods
- Critically read quality improvement literature
- Use information and communication technology


Syllabus

The module will first consider the nature and significance of quality management in health care, and then go on to study:
- the principal theories and principles of quality;
- the different quality frameworks and models;
- the benefits and drawbacks of Accreditation, Licensing, Certification and Auditing;
- the technical and professional issues in quality improvement;
- and the role of the health professional, citizen, user/patient and community.

Extensive use will be made of relevant literature and case studies, and students will be encouraged to develop their own quality principles, policy, framework and a quality improvement plan.

The module includes a site visit to see quality improvement in practice. Each student writes an online daily learning blog during the module which can be read and commented on by the other students and the tutor of the module.

Private study

Students use the private study time to read about the topics of the lectures, prepare for the field visit, work on their assignment, write their learning blog and comment (in the blog) on the learning experience of other students.

85 hours of private study include:
- 21 hours of additional reading and preparing for taught sessions
- 21 hours post lecture reading, 3 hours reading per lecture x7
- 25 hours researching and writing assessed course work (assignment)
- 18 hours of private reading
20 hours of online learning include use of VLE resource materials and blog exercise.

Students prepare a group presentation on a quality issue which has been agreed between them and the module leader. They work on a quality improvement plan within their own health care system for their assignment. Another source of independent learning is the online reflective learning blog of each student.

The blog reports and reflects about the daily learning experience, its applicability to the home country including required adaptations, useful literature and websites. Other students and module leader can read and comment on the blog.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Group work and exercises done in class are used to monitor learning, with verbal feedback given by lecturer during the lecture
- Group project including assessed presentation on a quality issue
- The module leader reviews the daily reflective learning blogs of the students to give immediate feedback to blog during the module and marks the blog at the end of the module
