Objectives
This module responds to current international health policy refocusing on the primary health care approach. Participants will be provided with knowledge and have the opportunity to practise methods and skills to analyse and strengthen health systems for primary health care in low-middle income countries.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse the development of health systems in low and middle income countries;
- Develop and use a methodology for health systems assessment and strengthening;
- Explain and appraise structures, values and approaches for the development of primary health care in a decentralized context;
- Review and discuss the organisation, role and integration of levels of health care in primary health care systems;
- Use key skills and methods to take a lead role in planning and management for primary health care.

Session 2: Models for health systems analysis; Measuring health systems performance
Session 3: Tutorial - Poster design and creation
Session 4: Requirements for effective health systems development (structures and values)
Session 5: Organisation and roles of different levels of care
Session 6: Leadership for primary health care
Session 7: Planning for district health programmes
Session 8: Capacity development of health workforce for primary health care
Session 9: Role of the community and health related sectors in strengthening district health systems

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Group work and exercises done in class are used to monitor learning, with verbal feedback from lecturer.Students also meet with personal tutor, module leader and specific lecturers to discuss issues arising from classes.
