Module summary
This module will provide students with knowledge and skills in managing the finances of a health facility or a department within a health facility. Using a case study approach, students will practice techniques of financial management, including setting budgets, applying budgetary controls and conducting financial audit.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to:- describe and analyse the role of financial management and its relation to planning and management in the health sector
- set and monitor a budget for a service or unit
- critique and apply different approaches to cost control and ensure value for money
- assess the financial performance of a health organisation
- evaluate the purpose and functioning of the principal financial systems in a health district
- outline the functions and apply techniques of audit and its uses for managers.

108 hours of private study include:- 21 hours of additional reading and preparing for taught sessions
- 21 hours post lecture reading, 3 hours reading per lecture x7
- 25 hours researching and writing assessed course work (assignment)

21 hours of on line learning include using the VLE which will provide additional reading and independent exercises
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The module design and learning activities allow for monitoring of individual student understanding and progress through student participation in classroom group work, inter-active discussion and financial scenario exercises and the provision of immediate formative feedback by the lecturer during lectures.
