Objectives
The module aims to teach the essential skills required to improve existing and to build new health services, programmes and related management systems in order to improve the public health of the communities amongst whom the participants work.In order to achieve the above, by the end of the module, participants should be able to:
1) use epidemiological /statistical methods to analyse the burden of disease and its trends
2) set priorities for health care delivery
3) appraise different strategies for interventions to improve health in order to select the most effective and feasible
4) design programmes and prepare action plans
5) apply enhanced knowledge and skills in planning and management, building on the learning in the foundation module
6) use enhanced skills in computing and information access.
Skills outcomes
- To use epidemiological/statistical methods to analyse the burden of disease and its trends
- To set priorities for health care delivery
- To appraise different public health strategies for interventions to improve health in order to select the most effective and feasible public health interventions
- To design programmes and prepare action plans for public health.
Syllabus
Major learning themes of the module include:
a) Descriptive Epidemiology and Statistics
- The production, handling and analysis of data
- the analysis and monitoring of ill health in the community
- the definition of health needs.
b) Public Health Interventions
- Overview of available public health interventions and strategies, including health promotion, vaccination, screening, vector control, environmental health (water and sanitation)
- control of specific disease groups: communicable and non-communicable diseases, epidemics
- target groups for interventions: age related (eg child health), location related (eg urban versus rural), gender related health issues.

This should consist of:28 hours - pre-lecture reading (1 hr/lecture)
56 hours - post-lecture and private reading (2 hrs/lecture)
45 hours - preparation for assignments, examination, reflective log
39 hours - private reading.

If a module has more than one assessment, and the student fails one or all assignments, resubmitted work will be marked on merit; however, the maximum mark achievable for a resubmitted component will not exceed 50. Group presentation: The mark for the group presentation is based on the overall mark and an assessment by the group members of the individual contribution to the group work. This assessment can lead to a reduction of up to 10% of the group mark for the individual member of the group. Marking scheme is provided in the assignment instructions.
