Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to understand and discuss critically in detail the philosophical views of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and to be able to read and interpret a primary text from each philosopher.

Learning outcomes
(1) Master the work of two key figures in the history of philosophy.
(2) Understand the role of historical and cultural context in determining the problem and style of the philosophers in question.

Skills outcomes
Interpreting philosophical texts.
Understanding philosophical context.
Critical analysis and evaluation.


Syllabus

Topics from Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Representation: The world as representation; the world as will; sexuality as the ‘will-to-life’; Schopenhauer’s aesthetics; pessimism and salvation.

Topics from Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morals: ‘slave’ morality and ‘master’ morality; bad conscience; ascetic ideals; the ‘will-to-truth’ and perspectivism.
