Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to understand and discuss critically in detail the philosophical views of at least one figure of the history of philosophy, and to be able to read and interpret a primary text from this philosopher.

More precisely, the knowledge outcomes are the following:
(1) Master the work of a key figure (or key figures) of the history of philosophy.
(2) Understand the role of historical and cultural context in determining the problem and style of the philosopher(s) in question.

- understanding of philosophical context
- detailed study and
- attention to text.


Syllabus

The module will focus on a study of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

Students will be:
- expected to read substantial portions of primary text, with interpretative assistance and guidance from the course leader;
- able to discuss the content and style of the subject critically and without recourse to excessive jargon.
