Module summary

The module will describe various theories and models that have been proposed to explain individual and population health behaviours (e. health belief model, theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behaviour, social cognitive theory). Using a case study approach, there will be examples of how these have been applied in practice. Principles of screening and issues relating to immunisation will also be discussed. The module will also reflect on different approaches to engage and communicate with the public on health issues. This module uses a blend of distance learning lectures, online discussion boards and face to face tutorials to facilitate students combining this module with other timetable commitments. Ten online lectures will be uploaded onto the VLE on a weekly basis. There will be three facilitated online discussion boards for students to post their own comments to a topic arising from the lecture, and respond to comments of other students. There will be three face to face tutorials throughout the term. These tutorials will be repeated on different days during the week, to allow students to fit these with their other modules.
