Objectives
To develop knowledge and understanding of neurosciences relevant to psychiatry.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module you should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the biological basis of mental disorders in relation to:
neuroanatomy
neurophysiology
clinical nuerophysiology
neuropathology
neurochemistry
neurendocrinology
neuro-radiology
genetics
Syllabus
Anatomy and function of: brain, lobes, gyri, cranial nerves and spinal cord; basal ganglia, temporal lobes and white matter. Cell types and major brain pathways.
Neurones, synapses, transmitters, receptors and passage of information. Relation between cerebral physiology and behaviour. Development and localisation of cerebral function.
The EEG, normal and abnormal; evoked responses.
Neuropathology of dementias, other organic disorders, schizophrenia, learning disability and movement disorders. Association between cerebral lesions and clinical signs.
Pharmacology of common transmitters, and their storage and release. Basic aspects of receptors and neuropeptides.
Secretion of hypothalamic and pituitary hormones. Neuroendocrine rhythms. Hormones changes in psychiatric disease.
Neuroimaging techniques such as X-ray, CT, MRI, PET.
Revision of basic structure and function of genetic material. Phenotypes and genotypes. Techniques for genetic investigation. Clinical genetics and psychiatric disorder.
