Objectives

To develop a knowledge and understanding of important clinical syndromes in psychiatry.

Learning outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical background and research basis for the main clinical syndromes and specialites within psychiatry (forensic psychiatry, substance use, olda age psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, learning disabilities and psychotherapy).

Demonstrate knowledge of the three main approaches to psychiatric treatment:
1. physical therapies
2. cognitive and behavourial therapies
3. dynamic therapies


Syllabus

Description, epidemiology, aetiology, investigation, treatment, outcome and organisation of services for the main groups of psychiatric disorders: neurosis, affective disorder, schizophrenia, organic disorders and disorders related to substance use. Suicide and deliberate self-harm. Psychiatry and the law. Mental health law and other relevant legislation. Consent and admission, detention and treatment.

Forensic psychiatry: psychiatry and its relation to the criminal justice system, court procedures (including reports), assessing dangerousness, specific groups of offenders (young people or those with learning disability) particular offences (such as arson, homicide, sex offences)

Description, epidemiology, investigation, treatment, prognosis and organisation of services for the disorders related to: learning disability, child and adolescent mental health, psychiatry of old age, liaison psychiatry (including head injury and stroke), eating disorders and sexual function.

Clinical psychopharmacology, including compliance, rational prescribing, prescribing of controlled drugs, protocols for prescribing and withdrawing certain drugs, placebo effects. Design and conduct of drug trials.

Electroconvulsive therapy and psychosurgery.

Basic concepts and techniques of cognitive and behavioural therapies; analysis of cases in treatment.

Principles and practice of dynamic and interpersonal psychotherapies
