i Part-time or full-time contract of employment (minimum duration one year) with the University of Leeds.

ii Wide range of teaching and assessment responsibilities - enabling participant to complete the assessments - within the University.

Objectives

By the end of the module, it is expected that participants will be better able to:

1. identify, and implement in their own teaching, the key characteristics of effective lecturing and small group teaching
2. describe and compare various structures and styles of lecturing and small group teaching
3. prepare and deliver well structured and managed lectures and small group sessions using appropriate audio visual aids
4. compare and implement techniques for facilitating interaction in large and small groups
5. assess and provide appropriate academic and pastoral support and guidance to students
6. compare and introduce appropriate aspects of the University's virtual learning environment (VLE) into own teaching and students' learning
7. enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education through awareness of and ability to evaluate relevant educational literature (both generic and subject-specific)
8. appraise and critically reflect upon their own approaches to lecturing and small group teaching and their role as an academic and pastoral tutor, and so develop their own practice.

- preparing, giving and appraising lectures
- preparing and using audio-visual aids in large and small group teaching
- questioning: the core skill of small group teaching
- purposes, structures and methods of small group teaching
- preparing, giving and appraising small group teaching
- encouraging students to talk and think
- reviews of research on large and small group teaching and audio-visual aids
- the University guidelines on academic and pastoral tutoring and the support agencies available to students
- VLEs in learning & teaching and their effective use
- the skills and attributes of an effective lecturer and tutor in a modern university

Consultation takes the form of mentor & peer discussions
Preparation & reading: 45 hours

Methods of assessment

Case Studyof teaching students. Participants will be required to prepare two different teaching sessions, to give the classes and to write a reflective commentary on the sessions. Preparatory work will include any visual aids or support materials produced for the session. Mentors will observe the classes and student's opinions should also be collected. The case study report should include the preparatory work, the records of the observations and the reflective commentary, based on mentor, student and self review . Participants will be expected to demonstrate their critical awareness and understanding of the relevant literature in the written parts of the assessment which will be marked by a member of the course team and the grade for the teaching component will be negotiated between the participant and the mentor. Participants must pass in both aspects - observation and written - of the assignment. Case Study report (total for both teaching sessions) should be 3,500-4,000 words excl appendices.100.00
