Objectives

By the end of the module, it is expected that participants will be better able to:

1. explore and review a wider range of teaching and assessment methods and their purposes;
2. effectively prepare for and implement a wider range of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment;
3. review and introduce appropriate aspects of the University's VLE and/or other C&IT tools into their own teaching and students' learning;
4. enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education through awareness of and ability to evaluate relevant educational literature (both generic and subject specific);
5. appraise and reflect critically upon their own approaches to, and understanding of, learning, teaching and assessment;
6. analyse their own professional progress and identify their own development needs.

Syllabus

- Designing teaching sessions to promote student learning
- Developing and embedding key skills within teaching and assessment
- Introduction to using communications and information technology (C&IT) in learning and teaching
- VLEs in learning and teaching and their effective use
- Attendance at appropriate workshops offered by: SDDU open programmes (Refreshing your Teaching, C & IT); LDU events, University L&T conference, Departments, LTSNs.

Private study

- 20 hours: Preparation & reading.
- 40 hours: Teaching practice (application of ideas, skills and methods).
- 20 hours: Reflection on teaching (1/2 hour per hour of teaching practice), including evaluating the outcomes and action planning.
- 40 hours: Preparation for, and of, the assignment.

Peer Observation consists of Mentor & Peer observation and discussion.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Meetings with mentors about summative assessment - case study.
- Discussion with mentor and peers in subject departments / schools.
- Discussion with programme tutors.
- Self-monitor by completion of audit tools, task sheets and professional development plan.
