Module summary

The intersectionality of gender, 'race' and culture will be stressed throughout the module within an analytical framework which draws on Cultural Theory and Postcolonial Studies.On successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate understandings of debates within Sociology, Cultural Studies and Postcolonial Studies on gender, 'race' and culture and their implications for matters of identity, politics, representation, theory and everyday understandings.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- identify key theoretical concepts in the study of gender, 'race' and culture
- understand the critical debates surrounding gender, 'race' and culture
- critically analyse cultural forms and practices from an intersectional - gender and 'race' - perspective
- review and critically appraise writing on gender, 'race' and culture
- synthesise information and knowledge from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives
- use the above to produce a critical essay which addresses key arguments and debates within the field of gender, 'race' and culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will gain knowledge of:
- a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary viewpoints on gender, 'race' and culture
- a range of methodologies deployed in the study of gender, 'race' and culture
- a range of theoretical concepts on gender, 'race' and culture
- key contemporary issues pertinent to the interdisciplinary study of gender, 'race' and culture.
