Objectives
To provide students with a thorough insight into contemporary social policy for disabled people with regard to:- education
- employment
- health and social support services
- benefits and the built environment, housing
- transport and public amenities
- self help and disability politics.
Syllabus
Social policy and disabled people throughout the post 1945 period with particular emphasis on developments during the 1980s and 90s.
Subjects to be covered will include:
- 'special educational needs'
- legislation and employment
- disability benefits
- health and social support services for disabled people
- public amenities - housing, transport and public buildings
- self help, organisation and politics.
Particular attention will be paid to the implications for disabled people and society as a whole of the 1988 Social Security reforms and the 1990 National Health Service and Community Care legislation.
