Objectives

On completion of this modules students be able to:
- understand the fundamentals of petrophysics and its use in the analysis of cores and geophysical well logs for reservoir characterisation and hydrocarbon assessment;
- acquire skills in the analysis of geophysical well logs for determining lithology, porosity and hydrocarbon saturation;
- understand the use of Gassman's equations to assess variations in reservoir fill during production (fluid substitution) and the uses of seismic attributes (eg AVO) in time lapse 4D seismic analysis of hydrocarbon reservoirs;
- be aware of seismic methods for assessing reservoir porosity via acoustic impedance and fractured reservoirs via seismic anisotropy and shear-wave methodologies;
- appreciate the petrophysical causes of, and methods of quantifying, anelastic attenuation and its use in the assessment of lithology, fractures and reservoir pore content;
- understand the collection, processing and interpretation of Vertical Seismic Profiles (VSPs).
