Objectives

• Understand the mechanisms of developing and managing an environmental contract
• Evaluate and respond appropriately to a range of environmental contracts and tenders
• Apply client and stakeholder management concepts in the environmental arena
• Apply concepts from communication and marketing theory in the environmental arena
• Evaluate the effectiveness of different contract management systems
• Design and deliver an environmental marketing strategy to develop new business
• Design and deliver an environmental client management system
• Develop contracts into projects: people and resource utilization
• Develop contracts into projects: budget development and management

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will know about and understand:

• The purpose of contracts
• The mechanisms of developing, scoping and managing an environmental contract
• How to respond to a range of environmental contracts and tenders, including creating limits to scope
• How to apply client and stakeholder management concepts in the environmental arena in order to design management systems
• How to apply concepts from communication and marketing theory in the environmental arena
• How to evaluate the effectiveness of and ultimately design, contract management systems
• That environmental consultancy contracts are fulfilled by applying and managing resources through effective contract and project management processes

1. Overview of environmental contract types
2. The contract process; from idea to invoice
3. The basics of client management and business development
4. Analysis of business-to-business communication in the environmental arena
5. Analysis of marketing strategies: what works in the environmental arena
6. Responding to calls; environmental contract writing and presentation skills
7. Practical project - development and presentation of tender requirements in an environmental case study
8. Understanding time and resource management, with environmental case studies
9. Budgets, billing and cash flow
10. Managing the contract; project management experience in the environmental arena.
11. Practical project - development of project proposal, costs and expected outcome of a consultancy project in an environmental case study
