Year running 2017/18
Pre-requisite qualifications
Successful completion of year 1 of the MSc Petroleum Geology and Geophysics ProgrammePre-requisites
SOEE5745M | Reservoir Simulation 1 |
Module replaces
The module will be part of the MSc Petroleum Geoscience ProgrammeThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
At the end of the module, students should:- be able to integrate different types of data (static, dynamic, geomechanical) and carry out the simulation of several reservoirs;
-understand upscaling from geological models to production simulation models;
- be able to apply reservoir modelling software to image and forward model production for a variety of static and dynamic reservoir conditions;
- be able to design work strings to simulate recovery under a variety of well location and production/injection strategies.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, the students should:
- be able to integrate the data necessary to build realistic deterministic and stochastic reservoir simulation models in order to simulate the dynamic behaviour of the fields, carrying out history matching and proposing field development plans to increase the recovery factor of the reservoir;
- be familiar with industry-standard techniques and software packages used in reservoir production simulation modelling;
- have gained a critical awareness of the key parameters and uncertainties associated with particular models and modelling strategies
- understand the non-uniqueness of history matching simulation models and be familiar with the importance of multiple realisations to capture key uncertainties in forward modelling.
- be confident at using industry standard production simulation software to model a range of problems.
Syllabus
- Upscaling for Reservoir Simulation
- Geostatistics. Multidisciplinary integration and geostatistics
- History matching and characterisation of the reservoir
- Treatment of faults in production simulation models
- Naturally Fractured Reservoirs. How to interpret fractures and incorporate these into a reservoir model.

Total hours (100hr per 10 credits) | 150.00 |
Private study
Students will have the opportunity to use the simulation software used in this module (available in the SEE computer cluster) as part of their private study and independent learning.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Monitoring (and formative feedback) provided via returned computer-based practicals/simulation exercises.Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Computer Exercise | 2 x computer based coursework (take-home assignment) | 50.00 |
Practical | Assessed Practical (in-class assessment) | 50.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
The resit for this module is normally held in August. In case of module failure, students will attend a resit exam similar to the in-class assessment, covering all of the module learning outcomes. For second attempts, the resit mark will represent 100% of the final mark. For first attempts, the final module mark will be calculated using the resit mark (50%) and the mark for the assessed courseworks obtained during semester 1 (50%).
