SPSC2304Mechanics of Sport/Exercise 2

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the mechanical principles underlying activities involving running, jumping, throwing and impacts and their implication for optimum performance;
- apply these principles to an analysis of sports performance;
- have experience in the use of a qualitative tool for modelling sports activity;
- be able to critically review the biomechanics research literature related to sports performance.

Syllabus

Optimal performance
- Kinetic and kinematic considerations.

Impacts
- Oblique impacts, spin and friction
- Implications for equipment design.

Running
- Anatomical considerations
- Energetics of bipedal locomotion.

Jumping
- Impulse
- Centre of mass and control of rotation.

Throwing
- Projectiles
