Module summary

This module discusses the physical principles, image quality and principal methods of protection associated with medical imaging technology, developing the fundamental principles introduced in Medical Imaging Science 1. It explores the biological effects of ionising radiation. It provides a wide knowledge base of the scientific principles underpinning the production, recording, transmission and display of medical images, and the safe operation of radiographic technology. The knowledge gained in this module will underpin safe clinical practice.

Objectives

Students will have enhanced knowledge in the following areas:

1. Interaction processes associated with medical imaging modalities
2. The biological effects of medical imaging modalities.
3. Radiation protection legislation and principal methods of protection associated with medical imaging modalities
4. Relevant physical principles and medical imaging technology
5. Image quality with respect to a range of medical imaging systems
6. Advantages and disadvantages of specific medical imaging systems

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Describe the interaction processes associated with medical imaging modalities
2. Discuss the biological effects of medical imaging modalities
3. Discuss the principal methods of protection associated with medical imaging modalities
4. Discuss the relevant physical principles and applications of medical imaging technology
5. Evaluate image quality with respect to a range of medical imaging systems
6. Understand mathematical principles related to a range of medical imaging systems
7. Appreciate the significance of emergent medical imaging technology

Skills outcomes
Science and technology underpinning the safe use of medical imaging equipment.

Undertake Quality assurance tests of medical imaging technology; interpret the results and take appropriate action.

Time is allocated in the module hours for supplementing and revising notes, visiting relevant websites, accessing electronic literature and library based study, and preparing for assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Mock computer examination.
Comments given on outline drafts of work.
Group formative seminars. Students prepare material related to a particular radiation biology and protection topic and present this to the whole class. (They have a choice of topics). Feedback is given by lecturers using the level 2 audiovisual marking criteria.
