Module summary
This module provides application of specific knowledge and a structure for practical skill development for the use of ultrasound in general medical ultrasound examinations. This module allows the student to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the co-requisite modules.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate skill in acquiring, interpreting & reporting General Medical ultrasound examinations and achieve competence to practise as an ultrasound practitioner.Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and pathological ultrasound findings relevant to general medical ultrasound
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of general medical ultrasound practice
- Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating to general medical ultrasound
- To take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others
- Demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations
- Reflect critically on practice and the role of ultrasound in the management of the general medical patient
Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need for appropriate ultrasound and select an appropriate technique
- Acquire, interpret and report appropriate ultrasound examinations competently
- Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required
- Critically evaluate ultrasound examinations for technical and diagnostic quality
- Assess and respond to an individual’s physical and psychological care needs during the ultrasound examination.

Anatomy and Pathology (Biochemistry/Histology)

Private study
Private study to include: literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation & critical evaluation of patient-based case report for summative assessment; maintenance of clinical learning record. Clinical simulation.Clinical Placement time: 150 notional academic hours is at a ratio of 2:1, 300 real hours of supervised clinical practice are required.

Students and their clinical mentors are encouraged to use the formative clinical and academic assessment process regularly throughout the module to develop self-assessment skills and to generate formative feedback identifying student progress and where additional learning and skill development is required.Peer and tutor feedback also given in case study discussions, assessment preparation seminars/quizzes. Tutor support will be given to assignment outline plans.
