Module summary

The museum/gallery work placement module is a dedicated, supervised, work placement opportunity for level 3 art gallery and museum studies students. Students are assigned an appropriate work placement opportunity at a museum, gallery or heritage organisation from a range of opportunities from museums and galleries in Leeds and the region, as well as opportunities as they arise at museums/galleries on the University of Leeds campus. Students negotiate placement workdays with the placement provider and complete a minimum of 9 placement sessions of 5 hours over the semester. The work placement is facilitated and managed by the placement module leader.

Objectives

To provide students with experience of work in the museums, galleries and heritage sector and the professional work environment. The module will be underpinned by employability skills training, reflective assessment and academic tutor support.

Syllabus

Besides the work placement itself, the module will have 4 taught sessions: week 1 will include an introduction to work placement delivered by the central placement team at the University. Further group tutorials in weeks 5, 8, and 11 will be devoted to student meetings with the module leader in order to help the students develop their assignments for the assessment for the module.

Students will be undertaking their work placement activities during weeks 2-11 of the module.

Private study

Students will undertake research into their respective placement provider as part of their private study time, and will be undertaking independent learning whilst in their respective working environment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The tutorial sessions allow regular monitoring of student progress; the module tutor will undertake a work placement visit during the course of the student work placement activities.
