Objectives

Students should have gained a knowledge of current research in a range of topics in human genetics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to;
- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in human genetics;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within human genetics;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in human genetics;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources; and
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project;
- be able to use the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to human genetics;
- be able to exercise initiative and personal responsibility;
- be able to deploy decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations.

Syllabus

This module will cover these topics;
- mechanisms leading to genome instability
- DNA damage, repair and recombination
- genome instability in cancer
- telemere biology; telomeres in ageing and cancer
- recombination and generation of diversity in the immune system
- single gene and complex disorders
- triplet repeat disorders
- protein structures and human genetic disorders
- chromosome syndromes, molecular cytogenetics and chromosome mosaicism
