Objectives

On completion of the module, students should:
- Have a basic understanding of the concepts involved in minerals extraction/processing, chemical engineering and materials processing techniques;
- Be familiar with the basic terminology used in the chemical, minerals and materials industries;
- Understand the basic underpinning science involved in a range of unit operations;
- Be familiar with the design and operation of a range of process engineering equipment and operations;
- Be familiar with global energy resources and energy consumption patterns;
- Be familiar with the properties, specifications and control measures of the major fossil fuels;
- Understand the basic science underpinning combustion in boilers and furnaces;
- Understand the principles of energy from renewable sources;
- Have developed a basic understanding of the science and engineering of nuclear power;
- Understand the basic environmental impacts of a range of industrial and energy related processes, including impacts to air quality, global climate, water quality, land and noise levels, and how they are monitored;
- Understand the basic concept of an environmental audit.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be familiar with a range of concepts, terminologies and unit operations used in production and process engineering, including minerals and metals extraction processes, chemical and pharmaceutical process techniques, materials processing, energy production and utilisation, and nuclear power. They should also be familiar with related environmental effects and understand the basic concept of an environmental audit.

Skills outcomes
Ability to present and critically analyse the content of an environmental impact assessment;
Ability to apply a range of skills to a variety of process engineering techniques and related environmental impacts;
Critical reasoning;
IT skills;
Research skills using a range of information sources.
