Module summary

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to ideal reactor systems and kinetics.

Objectives

- In-depth understanding of ideal reactors; batch stirred tank reactor, continuous stirred tank reactor and plug flow reactors.
- Understanding of elementary reactions, stoichiometry, and reaction rates.
- To provide a thorough grounding in performance evaluation, selection, design of batch, continuous stirred tank and plug flow reactors.
- Generate rate expressions from experimental data sets.
- To provide a basis for the reactor design aspects of the Design Project module.

Learning outcomes
Students will attain an appreciation of:
- Distinctive features of batch and continuous ideal reactors.
- Considerations of reactor evaluation, selection and design.

Skills outcomes
- Development of ability of reaction and reactor system analysis.
- Development of problem solving abilities, e.g. by conducting appropriate performance evaluation, to determine the key parameters of reactor and processes.
