Module summary
Students receive training through actual experimental/computational research work over two semesters.Objectives
- to enable students to demonstrate their research ability;- to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience of planning, executing and reporting a research project of the type they will undertake in an industry/academic environment;
- to provide students with the ability to give a scientific presentation.
Learning outcomes
Students will attain an appreciation of:
- Overall knowledge in the area of research (via literature review);
- Scientific understanding achieved from the research.

- Research initiation
- Literature review.
- Project planning.
- Experiments and analysis.
- Scientific presentation and report writing.
Syllabus
Project activities include:
- Literature review and background reading (to develop a clear understanding of the research topic).
- Familiarisation with research methodology (ie equipment, computer, software, etc), in particular, experiment design.
- Planning for the experimental and/or computational work to be carried out.
- Carrying out experimental/computational work.
- Analysis and interpretation of results.
- Oral presentation.
- Final report writing.
