Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:
(1) develop knowledge and understanding of the development, diagnosis and clinical management of common cardiovascular diseases through
case-based, self-directed and peer learning, team work and class discussions.
(2) improve communication skills through preparation and delivery of group presentations and written summaries.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
Describe and critique current evidence-based clinical guidelines for common forms of cardiovascular disease;
Summarise key information about the pathology, clinical presentations, risk factors, investigation and management of common forms of cardiovascular disease and apply to given case scenarios;
Evaluate the impact of ethnicity, diabetes and lifestyle in relation to cardiovascular risk;
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

Skills outcomes
Appreciation of the factor involved in the development and clinical management of common cardiovascular diseases. Effective communication skills demonstrated in the context of a group case presentation and hand out.

Syllabus

Five case scenarios will be considered during the module related to common cardiovascular diseases.
Each case (theoretical) will be reviewed with respect to:
Underlying pathology
Clinical presentation
Risk factors
Clinical investigation
Pharmacological and surgical management.
Keywords for each clinical scenario will be provided to guide students learning. Emphasis will be placed on the role of genetics, ethnicity, obesity, diabetes and lifestyle, which represent common horizontal themes across the Cardiovascular Pumps, Pipes & Electrics, Integrated Cardiovascular Physiology and The Cardiovascular Patient modules of the Clinical Sciences (Cardiovascular Medicine) programme.

Private study

Students will work in teams to carry out a review of recent literature, with a focus on evidence-based clinical guidelines, related to one of 5 case studies of common forms of cardiovascular disease. Students will develop group presentations for formative assessment with an accompanying fully referenced handout on aspects of pathology, clinical presentation, risk factors, investigation and management of patients, based on the single case study to be presented and discussed in a group-learning environment facilitated by academic staff.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through tutorials and group presenations. This is a case-based learning module and progress will be monitored through in-course formative assessment on a group presentation and handout, and through participation in group discussions. Students will receive group feedback from academic staff on the presentation and handout they prepare, in addition to receiving peer feedback from group discussions.
