Objectives
It is the aim of this module to provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of drug action at the molecular level, through examining how drugs interact with receptor molecules in the body.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Discuss the fundamental role of the interaction of drugs with molecular targets (receptors) in drug action
- Explain how specificity, efficacy, and potency of drug action are due to molecular interactions between drug and receptor
- Discuss the different main classes of drug receptor molecules, giving appropriate clinically relevant examples of drug-receptor interactions
- Critically evaluate the role of cholinergic and adrenergic receptors in the peripheral nervous system and discuss drug action and clinical use at these receptors
- Apply knowledge of the molecular mechanism of some drugs that act on the central nervous system to relevant clinical situations
- Apply critical understanding to how genetics can influence the clinical response to drugs
- Discuss the molecular action of different types of anti-cancer drugs
- Apply knowledge of the molecular mechanism of some drugs that act on the cardiovascular and reproductive systems to relevant clinical situations
- Prepare and present a poster explaining the molecular mechanism of a particular drug or class of drugs
Skills outcomes
The Cardiovascular Molecular Pharmacology module enables students to develop the following subject specific skills:
- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge of the role of drug receptors in the action of drugs on the body;
- understand the molecular basis of drug receptor interactions;
- use specific examples of named drugs to explain the mechanism of action of different classes of drug on a variety of tissue.
Syllabus
Pharmacology is the study of the action of drugs on the body. Over time, the mechanism of action of many drugs has been elucidated and it is now recognised that drug activity depends on the interaction of the drug with molecules within the body. It is the aim of this module to provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of drug action at the molecular level, through examining how drugs interact with receptor molecules in the body. As thousands of drugs are in use to treat a myriad number of diseases and conditions, this module cannot attempt to cover the whole of pharmacology. Instead, we will focus on the molecular action of a selected group of clinically important drugs and their receptors, including anti cancer drugs and cardiovascular drugs. From this module students should develop a general understanding of how drugs exert their effects at the molecular level, illustrated by specific examples.
