Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to develop an understanding of important physical and mathematical concepts appropriate to their studies in chemistry and to enable them to perform appropriate calculations associated with the corresponding physical quantities.

Learning outcomes
Students will gain familiarity with important concepts in mechanics, simple harmonic motion, heat and work, the behaviour of gases, wave motion, radioactivity, rotational motion, and electricity as well as mathematical concepts with specific applications in chemistry including differential and integral calculus, matrices and vectors.


Syllabus

- Newton's laws of motion, simple harmonic motion, heat and work, gases, waves, radioactivity and atomic/nuclear structure, rotational motion, electricity;
- Further differentiation; further integration; differential equations;
- Matrices and vectors and applications in chemistry.
