Module replaces
CHEM3120 Organic Chemistry of Transition and Main Group ElementsThis module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be familiar with the bonding modes encountered in transition metals with organic ligands, appreciate synthetic methods to important classes of complexes, and understand reactivity patterns. They should also appreciate aspects of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.
Learning outcomes
The course will enable students to appreciate the atomic structure of surfaces and porous materials and their reaction/interaction with molecules.
Syllabus
The course explains the most important bonding concepts found in transition metal complexes with o-donor and n-acceptor ligands, and discusses major classes of complexes, such as metal carbonyls, olefin and sandwich complexes, metal hydrides, and metal alkyls.
The reactivity of these complexes is discussed in relation to their steric and electronic properties, with emphasis on the reactivity of the metal-carbon bond, including their relevance to synthetic methodology and catalysis.
