CHEM5305MThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:(a) have an appreciation of important emerging techniques and methodologies relevant to chemical biology
(b) be able to solve deductive problems using experimental results obtained using emerging experimental techniques
(c) be able to critically assess the relative merits and values of different experimental approaches
(d) recognise the importance of emerging topics in a broad biological context.
Syllabus
Ten series of seminars covering important emerging topics in chemical biology will be given by leading researchers at Leeds.
Examples of topics include:
- Advanced applications of computational chemistry in drug design
- Combinatorial biological methods
- Chemical genetics
- Diversity Oriented Synthesis
- Directed evolution of enzymes with novel activities
- Probing molecular interactions by NMR
- Chemical Methodologies for proteomics, genomics and glycomics, high throughput screening.
The student-led workshops involve substantial (ca 20 hours) background reading and workshop preparation; students will give presentations on topical research areas to the rest of the group. Deductive problems will also require substantial (ca 20 hours) preparation time for background reading and data interpretation.
