Objectives
This module is designed to introduce students to the practices, processes and strategies employed in communication fashion design concepts.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- explore visual ideas and gather information that possesses the information for further creative development;
- develop visual ideas through a wide range of media;
- communicate and explain the rationale of ideas relative to designing effectively in verbal, visual or written forms and articulate these ideas in group discussion;
- acquire a critical perception of fashion within a social and cultural context;
- demonstrate self-motivation, commitment and self-discipline.
Syllabus
- The module commences with a range of research and design related activities.
- Through practical studio work, seminars and tutorials students explore and produce a range of drawing styles utilising various media, and examine the practice, process and strategies employed in communicating design concepts.
- Students explore sources of reference used in design research, and examine forms of fashion predictions available to practising designers.
- Creative design development will include the production of visual notebooks, sketchbooks and concept boards.
- Design work will be enhanced by the use of CAD and students will be expected to participate effectively in group/individual critiques and will become aware of the importance of self-motivation, commitment and time management.
The scope and format of suitable assessed outcomes - journals, notebooks, sketchbooks and concepts boards - will be introduced and discussed at appropriate points in the module.

Private study
Private study will be spent in:- Design Development: 60 hours
- Visual Research: 40 hours
- Library Research: 15 hours
- Preparation and presentation of work: 20 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored by:- Regular attendance at practical, seminar and lecture classes
- Contact with and feedback from project supervisor on a weekly basis in practical classes
- Tutorials at strategic times throughout the module.
