Module summary

The aim of the module is to provide the students with an understanding and appreciation of the fundamental concepts and principles of Graphic and Communication Media, in particular the relationship between word and image. Students will learn skills in typography choice and typesetting, colour, layout and image generation. Students will also learn about how to devise effective designs for a range of communication problems.

Objectives

The aim of the module is to provide the students with an understanding and appreciation of the fundamental concepts and principles of Graphic and Communication Media, in particular the relationship between word and image.

The module will encouraging an experimental /lateral approach to initial research, problem-solving, concept building, creative visualisation and typography, resolved through an active critical engagement with the concerns of the module.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- visually research and develop concepts pertinent to the set briefs;
- demonstrate familiarity with the basic concepts and principles of graphic communication;
- demonstrate an understanding of visual dynamics and the relationship between type and image and an understanding of typographic principles;
- appreciate the process by which creative communication effectively engages with an audience;
- coherently articulate and rationalise their visual / conceptual proposals in group critiques and presentation.

- persuasive communication.

Private study

Students are expected to carry out research on-line, analyse and present findings as well as complete assignments during private study.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There are opportunities for formative feedback during at least 5 of the seminar sessions. Students are also offered feedback on their sketchbooks.
