Module summary

Research is essential to producing innovative design and is the essential component of the design process. The purpose of effective Graphic & Communication Design is to provide information that will engage and stimulate targeted audiences. To enable the designer to address the issues surrounding a particular communication problem there must be a period of investigation and analysis achieved predominantly through primary research.Teamwork is also vital to successful design and communication; in this module you will undertake two projects, one of which will be in a team, that address both the audience and subject of a communication problem.

Objectives

The purpose of effective Graphic & Communication Design is to provide information that will engage and stimulate targeted audiences and social groups. To enable the designer to address the issues surrounding a particular communication problem there must be a period of investigation and analysis achieved predominantly through primary research.

Teamwork is also vital to successful design and communication; in this module you will undertake two projects, one of which will be in a team, that address both the audience and subject of a communication problem. Your team will explore every aspect of your research project and develop a unique perspective by analysing the results of your research, evaluating what is of interest and presenting your research findings to your chosen target audience.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- demonstrate an ability to initiate and undertake extensive on-site/primary research of a subject and target group
- be able to interpret, evaluate and select key content and visual data stimuli
- create an inspirational strategic research tool for undertaking a design brief
- demonstrate an understanding of visual language and its application
- work effectively as a member of a team.

- Primary research; collecting, recording, analysing and evaluating visual data
- Visual language; images, words, name and identity
- Design implementation; developing design ideas, design strategy and concept
- Project outcomes; scope and format and relation to the learning outcomes
- Presentation techniques for creative research.

Private study

Students are expected to carry out research on-line, analyse and present findings as well as complete assignments during private study. They are also expected to have regular team meetings outside formal contact time.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored in the timetabled group learning through group interactive seminars, interim group critiques and specific group teaching feedback slots within timetabled session.

The scope and format of assessed outcomes will be discussed and monitored to check that they are appropriate to the learning outcomes.

There are opportunities for formative feedback during at least 5 of the seminar sessions.
