Module summary

This module is available to take on its own but is particularly suited to take with DESN2180 Garment Technology for Knitwear, which takes place in semester 2.

Objectives

This module introduces students to the theory of knitted fabric production. It introduces the constrution methods and fabric
properties of common knitted structures and the relevant technology used to produce them. The emphasis of the module will
be on how and why specific fabrics are used in commercial use for apparel, healthcare, sportswear and technical fabrics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to: 1 Recognise and describe the properties and construction process of a range of common knitted fabrics, referencing the current technology used. 2 Understand the implication of individual fabric properties and the limitations of those properties on the design process. 3 Analyse the use of appropriate fabrics for a specified end use. 5 Use appropriate language when discussing knitted fabric technology.


Syllabus

The formation of the knitted loop and stitch notation.
Knitting machines and needle technology.
The construction, properties and uses of plain knit, rib and interlock.
Tuck fabrics including single bed picot fabrics, double bed half cardigan and spacer fabrics.
Miss fabrics including single bed float jaquard and double bed half milano fabrics.
Classes of Jacquard fabrics.
Jersey fabrics.
Material use in knitted fabrics including count systems.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored by attendance and engagement with lectures and practical sessions. Also by submission of eight field work reports which will be submitted digitally two weeks after the relevant lecture. Students will be required to investigate and record images and descriptions of knitwear demonstrating their understanding of the topic covered in each lecture. Group, verbal formative feedback will be given on a weekly basis during the following lecture. Individual, written formative feedback will be given in week 6.
