Module summary

This module is available to take on its own but is particularly suited to take with DESN2170 Knitted Fabric Technology for Design, which takes place in semester 1.

Objectives

This module introduces students to the theory associated with commercial knitted garment construction. It introduces the
constrution methods and design limitations of common and unconventional knitted garment shapes and the relevant technology used to produce them. The emphasis of the module will be on how and why specific construction methods are employed in commercial knitwear, with reference to technical parameters, costs and aesthetics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1 Recognise and describe the construction of a range of knitwear garment shapes.
2 Understand the limitations imposed on the design process by technical parameters.
3 To draw up commercially viable garment specification sheets.
4 To understand the design process using CAD/CAM technology.
5 Use appropriate language to discuss the detailed production of knitwear, referencing current technology.

Syllabus

A brief introduction to knitted fabrics.
Simple garment shapes for example body shape/fit, sleeve shape and neckline.
Ribs and Trims.
Shaping on knitting machines.
Garment specifications and stitch calculations.
Different garment production methods including cut and sew, fully fashioned and whole garment referencing the appropriate machines.
Detailed Whole garment technology
Use of CAD/CAM in design and production referencing Shima Seiki Apex system.
Unconventional garment shapes

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored by attendance and engagement with lectures and practical sessions. Also by submission of eight field work reports which will be submitted digitally two weeks after the relevant lecture. Students will be required to investigate and record images and descriptions of knitwear demonstrating their understanding of the topic covered in each lecture. Group, verbal formative feedback will be given on a weekly basis during the following lecture. Individual, written formative feedback will be given in week 6.
