Objectives
The objectives of the module are to:- introduce students to the development of fashion cultures, movements and styling in the 20th century;
- discuss key authors, theorists and methodologies for the study of fashion history;
- explore the relationship between politics, social change, commerce, art movements and the development of fashion products and services.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- critically analyse and comment upon the chronological development of fashion products and to illustrate work with contemporary and historical references;
- decode fashion products and analyse them within a framework drawing on social, political and economic references;
- understand the various processes involved in the design, production, consumption and marketing of fashion products, particularly clothing and related products;
- critically analyse the design process in relation to the diffusion and adoption of fashion products;
- comment upon contemporary issues concerned with fashion within a global context;
- interpret the ever changing external environment in which fashion operates and to identify relevant sources of information for further research and study.
Syllabus
Students will be guided through a historical study of fashion charting major developments over the 20th century. This will involve an analysis of the role of fashion within contemporary society.
By way of literary references and illustration, concepts relating to consumer behaviour and social change will be explored. This will involve enquiry into the impact of musical, political and social influences, particularly on the style, silhouette and structure of garments. The transfer, dissemination and adoption of various fashion styles will be examined with particular emphasis on underground fashion movements.
Key fashion designers will be studied and an analysis made of their sources of inspiration, methods of working and marketing themselves etc. An overview of production processes will be provided in order to understand the relationship the fashion sector has with other sectors of society.
The module will be delivered through lectures.
