DESN5301M Fashion Futures

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

This module builds upon the module DESN5301M Fashion Futures to introduce clothing production issues such as: the technologies, (eg CAD/CAM), manufacturing principles, (eg, appropriate machinery, design package, etc) and production management issues (eg skills, time, cost). For students interested in advancing their design and make skills, taking this optional module with DESN 5311M (Fashion Realisation and Contextual Studies), would represent 90 credits, ie one half of the programme.

Objectives

The purpose of the module is to introduce the terminologies, production processes and management issues regarding the development from a studio sample to volume production.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, the student will be able to demonstrate:
- knowledge of garment manufacture techniques
- an understanding of the relationship between fabric and shape
- an understanding of the relationship between production, cost and design issues
- an understanding of the appropriate manufacturing processes for specific textiles and clothing applications

Skills outcomes
- garment manufacturing techniques
- safely use appropriate manufacturing systems to produce clothing products
- Use of CAD/CAM to develop spec sheets, patterns and markers

Syllabus

The syllabus encompasses:
- developing the specification sheet
- the design package
- garment analysis
- stitch formation and types
- machineries in clothing manufacture
- CAD/CAM in clothing manufacture
- Costs in production

Methods of assessment

Coursework
Assessment typeNotes% of formal assessment
PortfolioA3 bound illustrated journal outlining: design inspiration, concept, feedback reflections, development work to commercialise design concept and range and CAD/CAM work.45.00
ProjectThe finished toile, its requisite patterns and specification sheet10.00
ReportOutlining reasons for: fabric selection and criteria, potential manufacture and production processes, cost of manufacture and projected retail price45.00
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework)100.00

- The Design Packages evidence the development: inspiration, concept, reflections and what, if any, changes need to be made to the design concept for commercialisation. Some text is included but this is mainly visuals and practical work. The 3750-4500 word equivalent word length is to ensure that the concepts are fully explained before the commercial design specifications are presented. - The Report should be between 2000-3000 words in length. The purpose of this report is to outline how the commercialised design concept might be manufactured and identify what sort of issues might need to be considered for the product specifically.
