Module summary
This, the second module on personal and professional development will consider at a basic level the roles of dental staff as professionals and their relationships with patients and colleagues. It will give consideration to some of the tensions that may arise between personal and professional responsibilities / behaviours and you will be asked to consider the meaning of 'professionalism' and to discuss its relevance. The central importance of the patient's perspective will be discussed, as will interactions with the dental team. Opportunity will be provided for communication skills training in simulated and real-life settings.Engagement with Leeds for Life will be central to the module. Meeting with your personal tutor will review learning goals and encourage open but confidential discussion of your academic and clinical strengths and weaknesses.Objectives
This module will:• give you opportunities to explore and better understand issues of ethics and professionalism, as they relate to dentistry.
• encourage you to critically reflect on your own developing professional skills and attributes as an individual and as a member of a team.
• focus on the understanding theory and practice of communication skills.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
• understand and articulate the professional, legal, ethical and personal responsibilities of a dental professional.
• critically reflect on their own personal and professional development in relation to life-long learning, with particular attention to developing communication skills.
• articulate the central importance of professional relationships with members of the dental team.
• demonstrate increasing awareness of professional and societal influences and expectations on them as the dental professionals of the future.

Reflective log In the few cases where a student is unable to complete an interaction with a simulated patient, there is an alternative and comparable assignment which requires the student to reflect on how their communication skills have developed throughout the year in interacting with patients on clinic. There are no word counts for either assignment; their requirement is for demonstration of reflection. Examples of effective reflection are: • Responding positively to feedback • Application of the principles of ‘in-action’ and ‘on-action’ reflection • Situational awareness • Recording of feedback and reflection • Understanding of how to identify and record learning need and the development of an action plan The essay and poster presentation are compensatable
