Module summary
This year-long, clinical module will begin with structured dental surgical rehearsal in the clinical skills classrooms and through access to the digital rehearsal suite, where (‘Simodont’ haptic simulation techniques will be employed. Mandatory training will be provided in disinfection, decontamination, oral and dental radiology and radiation protection. Revision / advancement of standards in the management of medical emergencies will be gained in the simulation suite. On satisfactory completion of all these requirements, students will be certified with a ‘passport’ for progression to the clinical management of postgraduate cases in the Leeds Dental Institute. Clinical experience will be guided under the supervision of Consultants, Specialists and senior dental surgeons. Participants will engage with the dental laboratory and gain hands-on experience of current techniques. They will document clinical cases to the required standard; training in the techniques of oral clinical photography will be included. Students will be required to use these skills as they begin to compile a portfolio of the clinical cases, prepared either in their own general dental practice (if on the flexible programme) or in the Dental Institute. Feedback will be sought by candidates and guidance will be given about the development of a personalised, reflective log. Objectives
The aims of this module are:• To provide an opportunity for skills rehearsal and development in the simulation suite, using conventional ‘phantom heads’ and state- of-the-art ‘Simodont’ haptics
• To guide the student to prepare a ‘passport’ to advanced clinical practice in General Dental Surgery
• To ensure completion of mandatory training
• To give education, practical experience and validation of skill in the management of medical emergencies
• To provide clinical cases for management by the student, under the close supervision of Consultants, Specialists and senior dental surgeons
• To provide guidance on the selection and management of cases chosen for care by the student in their own practice setting, for those on the flexible pathway
• To provide the opportunity for hands-on experience of relevant laboratory procedures
• To provide access to mandatory training
• To ‘certify’ students as ready for clinical practice in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
• To guide students through the development of required case documentation and patient /colleague feedback, including the use of clinical photography and the creation of a reflective log
Learning outcomes
On completion of this extended module, the student will be able to:
1. Evidence the quality of their clinical aptitude and skill to a level commensurate with postgraduate clinical practice
2. Complete mandatory training and medical emergencies’ management to an approved standard
3. Manage clinical cases under the care of Consultants, Specialists and senior dental surgeons in the clinics of the Leeds Dental Institute (and in your own practice, if on the flexible programme)
4. Evaluate and apply relevant laboratory techniques, including prescription
5. Reflect critically on own clinical practice, gather feedback and evaluate the quality of learning through the creation of personalised, reflective log
Skills outcomes
The module is built around the development of clinical skills, all relevant to advanced general dental practice
