Module summary
This module is designed to build on the knowledge and skills of the general dental practitioner in a range of applied sciences fundamental to daily practice. These include an update on the oral tissues in health and disease, techniques for enhanced communication, behavioural management and the promotion of oral health. The module will promote an enquiring and critical appreciation of the literature and will include participation in seminars. We will also consider the application of multiple knowledge streams and the use of evidence to support the formulation of diagnoses and treatment plans for patient care.Objectives
The aims of this module are:- to build on the existing knowledge of the practising GDP
- to develop an enquiring and critical appreciation of current research evidence, best practice and clinical guidelines
- to deepen understanding of regional anatomy and physiology of the head and neck, periodontal tissues and pulp-dentine complex
- to present for consideration in-depth issues in relation to commonly encountered dental health conditions
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate an advanced ability to apply best practice, clinical evidence and appropriate clinical guidelines in relation to oral health promotion, behavioural management and effective communication
2. consider the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck region and pulp-dentine complex / periodontal tissues in relation to health and disease
3. demonstrate in-depth appreciation of evidence based treatment and the monitoring of commonly encountered dental diseases
4. explain the use of effective communication and behavioural management strategies

- Regional anatomy and physiology of the head and neck
- The anatomy and physiology of the healthy periodontium and pulp-dentine complex
- Common oral and dental diseases
- Techniques of oral health promotion at individual and population level
- Theory of effective consultation skills and behavioural management in the dental clinic and rehearsal
- Use of best evidence in clinical decision-making and making effective treatment plans

Independent online learningStudents will work through simulated clinical cases, which will incorporate self-assessment quizzes, links to research papers and clinical guidelines. Work on these cases will be supported by tutorial discussion.

Students will follow up references and texts recommended in the lectures and on-line materials, and broaden their reading around the subject matter.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
