Module summary
This module will ask the student to consider the relationship between oral and general health, from infancy to old age. We will analyse the basic/clinical sciences that underpin oral and peri-oral conditions and their surgical/ pharmacological/therapeutic management. Strategies for the management of dental anxiety/pain in the child, adult and ageing population will be shared. The module will also include the recognition of neglect/abuse and the reasons for and mechanisms of patient referral.Objectives
The aims of this module are to:- Allow consideration of the holistic management of patients with advanced needs (dental, medical, socio-economic or age-related)
- Discuss current evidence, guidelines and best practice in relation to the oral care of children, adults and the elderly
- Explore the role of the dental surgeon in safeguarding and the recognition of neglect or abuse
- Facilitate agreement of when and how to make patient referral
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Analyse scientific and clinical information related to the management of acute and chronic oral/peri-oral conditions in children, adults and the ageing population
2. Evaluate the relationship between oral and general health
3. Deduce and evaluate appropriate surgical, pharmacological and therapeutic approaches to the management of related pain
4. Employ relevant strategies for the management of dental anxiety and pain in all age groups of the population
5. Promote the highest standards of oral health education for patients of all ages, including those who are medically compromised
6. interpret signs of neglect / abuse and the management of patient referral for general health and dental reasons

Syllabus
• Basic and clinical science related to acute and chronic peri-oral pain conditions in patients of all ages
• The interface between oral and general health
• Surgical, pharmacological and therapeutic approaches to the management of dental pain, in relation to oral and general health in the child, adult and ageing patient
• Strategies for the management of anxiety for scheduled and emergency dental patients
• Prevention of disease and promotion of oral health for the child, adult, ageing or medically compromised patient
• Signs of neglect and abuse in adults and children and management of this and other reasons for patient referral

Independent online learningStudents will work through simulated clinical cases, which will incorporate self-assessment quizzes, links to research papers and clinical guidelines. Work on these cases will be supported by tutorial discussion.

Students will follow up references and texts recommended in the lectures and on-line materials, and broaden their reading around the subject matter.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Contribution to tutorials. Automatic feedback will be provided in the formatting of the in-course MCQ quizzes.Feedback will be given in relation to the poster presentation.
