Module summary

• Diagnostic skills, covering hard and soft tissues• Clinical decision-making in oral medicine and oral surgery• Medical management in the dental setting and the role of the dentist in the management of general health• The benefits of working as part of an integrated Managed Clinical Network (MCN) to enhance the delivery of high quality patient care.

Objectives

The aims of this module are:
• To provide up-to-date insight into the relationship between oral and general health and the role of the dental practitioner
• To provide detailed information in relation to the management of oral surgical and oral medical cases at the level of the advanced general dental practitioner

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Extrapolate the links between oral and general health, particularly with relevance to the role of the advanced general dental practitioner in oral medicine and oral surgery
2. Diagnose and know how to manage a range of oral and peri-oral medical and surgical conditions
3. Critically evaluate and know which cases are within the remit of the advanced general dental practitioner and the bounds of individual competence
4. Reiterate the relevance of referral, including when there may be urgent need
5. Understand the benefits of integrated Managed Clinical Networks for enhanced patient care

Syllabus

• Development of an evidence-based knowledge of competencies in oral surgery and oral medicine, appropriate to the level of the advanced general dental practitioner
• Monitoring and evaluation of treatment outcomes
• The benefits of Managed Clinical Networks
• Detailed consideration ot the relationship between oral and general health and common oral manifestations of systemic disease

Private study

Independent online learning:
Students will work through simulated clinical cases, which will incorporate self-assessment quizzes, links to research papers and clinical guidelines. Work on these cases will be supported by tutorial discussion.
Private Study
Students will follow up references and texts recommended in the supporting materials, and broaden their reading around the subject matter.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Contribution to tutorials and case-based discussions.
Automatic feedback will be provided in the formatting of the in-course MCQ quizzes.
