Module summary
This exciting module will cover the management of the dentition and its supporting structures, through the use of state-of-the-art periodontal techniques (including the indications and rationale for periodontal surgery), as a basis for the general dental practitioner to apply modern concepts in contemporary fixed and removable prosthodontics. The very latest techniques will be employed for the management of tooth wear, failing restorations and occlusal problems, including the use of CAD/CAM and digital dentistry. There will be consideration of the transition to edentulousness, its indications and the management of the patient with no teeth, including the use of denture-supported implants. Objectives
The aims of this module are:• To provide detail, in a challenging yet informative way, about the more advanced management of the periodontal complex (e.g. in relation to advanced or aggressive periodontal diseases)
• To encourage dialogue and critical reflection in relation to modern concepts of dental restoration in fixed and removable prosthodontics
• To consider the failing dentition and transition to edentulousness
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Compare different presentations, diagnoses and modalities of treatment for cases of advanced periodontal disease, in particular where treatment needs are more broadly restorative in nature
2. Recommend and consider provision of appropriate, advanced methods of reconstruction of the dentition, at a level appropriate to the advanced general dental practitioner, including reiterated consideration of the central importance of occlusal considerations
3. Judge when the dentition might be deemed unrestorable and make workable strategies for transition to edentulousness
4. Understand the principles of advanced dental consultation and explanation
5. Critically appraise the justification for dental implants and the need for and replacement of complete dentures
