Objectives

By the end of this module, students will have
- gained an awareness of modern Japanese literary texts and confidence in reading them;
- attained an understanding of key moments and authors in the development of modern literature;
developed skills for close reading, engagement and critique of the texts.

As literary Japanese utilizes to the full the ambiguity of Japanese syntax, the course will build and strengthen generic translation and reading comprehension skills.

Learning outcomes
To write Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Japanese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.

Skills outcomes
Reading comprehension and translation skills of literary Japanese; critical analysis skills.


Syllabus

The course will introduce students to the beauty and complexity of literary Japanese, through reading original works (from the 1910s to the present). The chosen texts will be selected from among the most influential and well-known moden Japanese writers such as Natsume Sôseki, Akutagawa Ryûnosuke, Mishima Yukio and Murakami Haruki. The classes will consist of short introductory lectures, reading, translation and discussion of particular texts.
