Objectives
To develop research, analytical and writing skills with specific reference to academic study of the Asia Pacific region.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
- choose a topic and research it in greater depth;
- demonstrate the skills needed to carry out a research project;
- apply theories and concepts that have been grasped during the taught element of the programme to resolve a practical problem or issue related to the programme of study;
- locate and use the kinds of sources required for research work in the East Asian Studies field;
- employ the techniques involved in the writing-up and presentation of a substantial piece of academic research;
- organise and carry out research independently.
Syllabus
The dissertation topic is decided by discussion between the student and the supervisor, subject to the approval of the Course Director.
The module includes compulsory seminars on research techniques specific to academic work on Asia, for example East Asian bibliography.
The student will be responsible for producing an extended piece of writing conforming to advanced academic standards, based on original research.

Progress is monitored through:1) a short research proposal;
2) guidance and supervision provided by an allocated dissertation supervision.
