Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have improved their understanding of modern Chinese language and literature through a detailed study of works of fiction and literary essays from the Republican period (1912 - 1949).Students should have enhanced their ability to read sophisticated Chinese and discuss works of literature from this period in their literary, political or cultural contexts.
Learning outcomes
To write Chinese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Chinese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.
Skills outcomes
Written Chinese communication skills, translation skills.
Syllabus
In this module students will read in Chinese from a selection of literary works such as short stories and essays by prominent writers of the Republican period (1912 - 1949). Authors to be studied may include Lao She, Ding Ling, Shen Congwen, Zhang Tianyi, Ba Jin, Zhou Zuoren or Feng Zikai.
In addition to close reading of the selected works and analysis of their literary qualities, there will also be opportunities to discuss these works in their cultural, political or social context.
Students will be expected to read related works of literature in translation and secondary sources about the literature of the time.
