Module summary

This module gives students the opportunity to study a variety of key primary source texts from the fields of politics and international relations of Japan. Themes will vary year by year to reflect current trends, but will typically include political reform in Japan, Japan's security role in the region and the world, and Japanese nationalism. Students will develop skills of extensive and intensive reading in Japanese and thereby deepen their understanding of Japanese politics and international relations. The module will build knowledge of Japanese politics and international relations as well as transferable skills for reading, analysis and translation of original Japanese texts. This knowledge and skills, assessed through an essay and exam, will help students when carrying out research and working with Japanese primary sources for their dissertation.

Objectives

This module will:

- provide students with a greater awareness and understanding of the language and vocabulary of Japanese texts specific to the areas of politics and international relations;

- give students a high degree of competence in reading Japanese texts relating to politics and international relations;

- allow for greater understanding of the broader significance of the particular texts studied;

- developed students' abilities to discuss texts critically in terms of the context in which they were produced.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students will be able to write Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Japanese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar. To apply the understanding and skills acquired in the module when researching primary sources for the dissertation, in line with the objectives and outcomes of the Masters programmes.

Reading comprehension skills of documentary Japanese, specific to the areas of politics and international relations; critical analysis skills.


Syllabus

The module will be run in student-led seminar-style classes. A variety of contemporary and important texts from the fields of politics and international relations of Japan will be selected. Given the contemporary nature of this course, the specifics of individual texts will necessarily vary from year to year but will include such themes as education reform and citizenship in Japan, Japan's security role in the region and the world, and Japanese nationalism. The classes will consist of elements of extensive and intensive reading, followed by discussion and analysis of sections of the texts that are of interest in terms of their use of language and/or contextual relevance.
