Module summary

If modernity equals the West, then how can one be modern and Japanese? How was 'Japaneseness' imagined in the transnational age of capitalism and imperialism? How did Japanese intellectuals confront the oppositions of the modern experience: between an "authentic" past a superficial present; between individualism and belonging, politics and culture, local identifications and the national? This module will focus on original Japanese texts (from the 1890s to the present) dealing with the problems of cultural identity: essays and articles by Natsume Sōseki, Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, Sakaguchi Ango, Kawabata Yasunari and others. The module will build knowledge of Japanese intellectual history and cultural critique as well as transferable skills for reading, analysis and translation of original Japanese texts. This knowledge and skills, assessed through an essay and exam, will help students when working with Japanese primary sources for their dissertation.

Objectives

This module will:

- provide students with significant knowledge of original Japanese texts dealing with intellectual history and cultural critique;
- allow students to develop a high degree of competence in reading these texts;

- develop knowledge of the broader socio-political and discursive contexts in which the texts emerged.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to write Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Japanese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar. To apply the understanding and skills acquired in the module when researching primary sources for the dissertation, in line with the objectives and outcomes of the Masters programmes.

Skills outcomes
- close reading and translation;

- analysis and critique;

- sensitivity to the rhetorical strategies texts use in order to make their arguments.
